I entered the field of masonry on the advice of a sage farmer, Robert Barlow, who was like a father to me. He discouraged me from following in his footsteps, telling me, “It’s hard to make a living in dairy farming. You need a trade.”

It was good advice.

I founded my masonry business in 1984. It was originally called Savage Masonry and in 2000 I changed the name to Savage Construction, Inc. In the early years of running Savage Masonry, I was mentored by a union mason, J.D. Townsend, from Poughkeepsie. Working side by side, he willingly taught me all he knew, laying the foundation for the future of my business.

Over the course of my many years in business, I have had the privilege to work on a variety of fascinating projects which have allowed me to grow and explore my artistic side. I have crafted stone and brick homes, custom fireplaces and masonry structures, but I most enjoy creating custom landscapes for clients.

Through the years, I have had the good fortune to work with several very talented landscape designers, learning a great deal from them. Today, much of what we do at Savage Construction is associated with landscaping.

Savage Construction is built on several principles which have helped me succeed over the years:

  1. First and foremost, hard work. Many of my craftsmen have been with Savage Construction for years and I am proud to say that our team is one of the best in the area. We understand quality and all it takes to achieve it, including long, hard days of work.

  2. Second, good relationships. Over the last 30 years, I have developed a great working rapport with a select group of contractors in the area. The familiarity that comes from these long term partnerships ensures a smooth and efficient process during construction. I am also committed to forming positive relationships with the homeowners I work with. This is, after all, part of the joy of the job! I love meeting new clients and working together on their dream home or landscaping vision.

  3. Third, my primary aim is to make each client happy. I know how important it is to include clients in the decision-making process. In the planning stages, I spend a great deal of time with my clients, trying to understand exactly what they are looking for. This way, I can ensure that the final result will meet (or exceed!) their expectations. Good, open communication is a necessary key for success – it helps me ensure that our work meets the client’s vision.
